Biography

Rich Walton is Of Counsel in the firm’s Corporate, Litigation and Tax and Estate Planning Practice Groups in Los Angeles. Mr. Walton represents corporations and high net worth individuals in resolving complex Federal criminal and civil tax controversy matters. He is also an adjunct professor of law at USC School of Law, where he teaches Federal Crimes, and is an instructor at UCLA Extension, where he teaches Business Law and Business Valuation. In addition, he frequently participates as a panel moderator and speaker on tax and Federal criminal issues, and serves as Chair of the Planning Committee for “Tax Controversies: A Day with the Government,” a San Francisco-based symposium featuring tax controversy experts from across the nation.

Mr. Walton is a prolific author in his field, most recently co-authoring the BNA Portfolio on FIN 48—the new and convoluted rules governing how companies account for tax issues. He has been a presenter for the Oxford Round Table at Oxford University, and was named a 2008 Southern California Super Lawyer Rising Star.

Mr. Walton’s professional experience includes serving as an attorney advisor to the U.S. Tax Court in Washington, D.C., and at the United States Department of Justice, Criminal Division, also in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Walton is the President of a local chapter of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants for 2010-11, an associate member of the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, serves on the American Bar Association Taxation Section’s Committee on Litigation and Penalties, and is the Chair of the Procedure and Litigation Committee of the LA County Bar Association's Tax Section.

Mr. Walton is an honors graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center, where he earned his J.D. and LL.M. in Taxation. He is also a Certified Public Accountant in Delaware.
