Buchalter APC has an opening for a Research Analyst within our Research & Information Services Department. The Research Analyst conducts in-depth reference and research across various practice areas of law and business, and supports the Firm’s business development efforts. This position requires proficiency in prioritizing and completing multiple projects with varying deadlines and levels of difficulty. This position can be based in any of the following offices: Los Angeles, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Diego, Nashville, San Francisco, Orange County, Scottsdale, and Portland. There is only one opening.
Responsibilities:
- Perform high-level, in-depth research and analysis in legal, business, and other subjects using appropriate electronic resources.
- Complete reference and research requests accurately, thoroughly and promptly each day.
- Analyze research results and exercise professional judgment about relevance of research materials and their inclusion in the results delivered to the requestor.
- Communicate and package research findings clearly and concisely.
- Set up litigation, docket, legislative, regulatory, news and business alerts across various platforms to meet the information needs of attorneys and clients.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of the scope, accuracy, and cost effectiveness of various research resources and select the optimal resources for specific research requests.
- Bill for time spent on research utilizing the firm’s billing software.
- Participate in the maintenance of the Firm’s SharePoint practice and jurisdictional resource pages.
- Support the Firm’s use of research databases by coordinating training sessions and conducting orientations for new attorneys and paralegals.
- Maintain awareness of current legal and business research materials, techniques, strategies and resources to build research skills in new areas of the law and emerging technologies, as well as monitor legal developments that impact the Firm’s practice areas.
- Provide coverage in the event of other department staff member absences.
- Work on special projects or any other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Library and Information Science and/or J.D. from accredited institution preferred.
- Minimum of 2+ years law firm experience.
- Demonstrate strong skills conducting complex research and a deep understanding of research strategies, legal concepts and terminology and basic knowledge of litigation and transactional practices.
- Ability to effectively conduct research in unfamiliar disciplines, areas or jurisdictions, as necessary.
- Extensive expertise with research databases such as Lexis, Westlaw, Practical Law, Bloomberg, VitalLaw, S&P Capital IQ and Intelligize; and an ability to learn multiple research platforms.
- Responsive, service-oriented, and able to manage multiple projects, deadlines and shifting priorities in a fast-paced setting.
- Ability to prioritize requests with a high level of competency, accuracy and attention to detail with minimal supervision.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking skills to facilitate presentations.
- Confident and approachable manner when communicating with all levels at the firm.
- Energetic and highly-motivated work ethic, desire to constantly seek out ways to improve knowledge and processes and have commitment to professional growth.
- Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills with consistent application of sound judgment.
- Ability to develop and foster productive working connections across the department, practice groups, office and firm, as well as with vendors and others outside the firm.

Pay Scale: The reasonably expected pay scale for this position is $80-110k. This is an employer estimate and the salary offered within that range, and the potential for bonus and bonus amount, will depend on candidate’s years of practice and experience and performance.
