Linda Joy Kattwinkel is Of Counsel in the Firm’s San Francisco office and a member of the Intellectual Property practice group. Ms. Kattwinkel is a visual artist. Her law practice focuses on copyright, trademark, and visual artists’ rights. Before her law career, Ms. Kattwinkel worked for thirteen years as a graphic artist in editorial, corporate, and advertising design. She continues to make art at her studio in San Francisco. Her artwork has been shown in more than thirty-five museum and gallery exhibitions, and has received several juror’s awards. Examples of her work can be seen here.

While in law school, Ms. Kattwinkel co-founded, edited, and created the logo and book design for the Hastings Women’s Law Journal, and also gave birth to her son. She co-founded the support group Mothers in Law, and published an article with her artwork, On Motherhood and Working, 3 Hastings Women’s LJ1 (1992). She externed with the Honorable Marilyn Hall Patel, United States District Judge for the Northern District of California. Upon graduation, she served as a long-term judicial clerk to the Honorable Claudia Wilken, United States District Judge for the Northern District of California. She practiced law with Owen, Wickersham & Erickson for thirty years before joining Buchalter in 2025.

Ms. Kattwinkel served as a neutral on the ADR panel of the Northern District for 14 years, and continues to mediate disputes through California Lawyers for the Arts.

Ms. Kattwinkel is the author of Legalities, an online column on legal issues for artists and designers, and dozens of published articles focused on arts and design law. She is a co-author of the AIGA’s Standard Form of Agreement for Design Services, and legal editor for the Graphic Artists Guild Handbook. She has served as the Chair of the Copyright Society of the U.S.A., Northern California Chapter, and as a member of the GAG Advocacy Committee. Ms. Kattwinkel was the lead author of a U.S. Supreme Court amici brief filed on behalf of artists’ organizations in the 2023 landmark copyright case The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc. v. Goldsmith. She speaks frequently to artists and lawyers regarding artists’ issues.
