The U. S. Department of Health and Human Services (“HHS”) has recently released a security risk assessment tool to help health care providers comply with the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (“HIPAA”). The tool is available here.  The release of this tool is particularly timely in light of the recent major enforcement actions by the HHS Office for Civil Rights that underscore the significant risk to the security of patient information posed by unencrypted laptop computers and other mobile devices.
