It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of our dear friend, colleague and partner, William “Bill” Schoenholz.
For decades, Bill was an integral part of Buchalter, helping shape the firm’s success through his exceptional legal acumen, visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to clients. He started his career as a first-year associate at the firm in 1981 and was celebrating his 45th year of practice in 2026. As a member of the Firm’s Board of Directors, he played an important role in guiding Buchalter’s growth and strategic direction, leaving an enduring mark on the institution he helped build.
Bill was widely recognized as one of the leading banking and finance attorneys in the country. A trusted advisor to financial institutions, lenders and businesses, Bill earned the respect of clients and peers alike through his mastery of complex transactions, practical judgment and dedication to achieving outstanding results. His professional accomplishments were numerous, including years of recognition by Chambers USA as a leader in his field and widespread acclaim as one of the profession’s premier banking lawyers.
Bill’s legacy extends far beyond his remarkable professional success. He was a consummate gentleman whose greatest gift was building lasting relationships grounded in trust, integrity and genuine friendship. He generously shared his knowledge, mentored countless attorneys and was always willing to offer guidance, encouragement or a thoughtful perspective. Bill’s kindness, humility and generosity touched everyone fortunate enough to work with him.
Above all else, Bill cherished his family and spoke of them with immense pride and love. They remained the center of his life. His dedication as a husband, father, family member and friend was evident in everything he did. While he achieved extraordinary professional success, those who knew him best understood that his greatest source of joy came from the people he loved. Family was at the center of Bill’s life and he seamlessly blended love of family and hard work.
Bill was also passionate about golf, a game he approached with the same enthusiasm, discipline and sense of camaraderie that defined his professional and personal life. On the golf course, friendships were strengthened, stories were exchanged and Bill’s warmth, humor and competitive spirit were always on full display. Bill regularly maintained a single-digit handicap.
Bill’s passing is an immeasurable loss to our firm, our profession and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of leadership, mentorship and compassion will continue to inspire us for many generations to come.
