“Several months ago I was chatting with a practicing attorney friend who had the occasion to ask me, “Now, what exactly do you DO?”, to which I explained I was a privacy lawyer. At the time, I was the global head of privacy for a U.S. publicly traded company. Her response was not uncommon. With a quizzical and somewhat embarrassed look, she asked me precisely what that was, and how would she know if she ever had a privacy issue in her practice. She laughed and said she wasn’t sure how to “issue spot” a privacy issue. My answer was brief: privacy lawyers specialize in the laws protecting personal information; helping individuals and organizations comply with complex regulations like GDPR, CCPA, and HIPAA by drafting policies; managing breach responses; advising on data collection/use; and representing clients in disputes over data misuse or security failures.”
