11th Circ. Wage Ruling Highlights Volunteer Benefit Pitfalls

"Leah Lively of Buchalter PC, who represents employers, said an entity might consider not offering any volunteer benefits at all.

"Do you need to be promising something for your volunteers?" Lively said. "And if you're promising something, is it beyond those basics of food, clothing, shelter that you would need, that might get you into trouble down the line?"

An entity might want to make the benefit, or lack thereof, clear in any advertisements for volunteers, Lively said".
