Sara Tanner is an Attorney in the Firm’s Orange County office and a member of the Litigation and Health Care practice groups. Ms. Tanner represents health systems, hospitals, physician groups, and Accountable Care Organizations (“ACOs”), amongst other health care entities, in complex commercial litigation. Ms. Tanner has experience in state and federal court, as well as in arbitration related to a broad range of disputes.

Ms. Tanner has extensive experience representing providers in contracted and out-of-network reimbursement disputes against managed care organizations and health insurers. Ms. Tanner has experience in all stages of litigation, from action initiation to settlement negotiation or trial. She advises provider clients regarding managed care contracting and revenue cycle best practices to assist clients in avoiding litigation where possible. Ms. Tanner also represents and advises ACOs in various areas of commercial and financial activity, and related to a broad range of issues related to value-based care.

Prior to joining the Firm, Ms. Tanner served as in-house counsel for one of the nation’s largest health systems, where she focused primarily on payor reimbursement and contracting disputes, and implemented key revenue cycle strategies at acute care hospitals in California and Nevada. Ms. Tanner also previously worked at a boutique health care firm where she recovered millions of dollars from managed care organizations on behalf of provider clients.

While in law school, Ms. Tanner completed an externship at the Department of Managed Health Care (“DMHC”)’s Office of Enforcement. DMHC’s Office of Enforcement ensures that health care service plans in California comply with the Knox-Keene Health Care Service Plan Act of 1975, the governing managed care statutes and regulations promulgated thereunder.

Ms. Tanner earned her J.D. from the University of California, Davis School of Law, where she served as an Articles Editor on the UC Davis Law Review, a Teaching Assistant for first-year students in their Legal Research and Writing course, and the Vice President of the UC Davis School of Law Health Law Association. She earned her B.A. with a dual major in Economics and International Relations from Scripps College, where she completed her Senior Thesis with honors.
