Buchalter APC, a full-service business law firm, has an immediate opening for a Bankruptcy Legal Assistant based in our Los Angeles Office. There is only one opening.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Processing, drafting, and filing bankruptcy-related documents.
- Gathering information from creditors, debtors, trustees, and court clerks.
- Obtaining credit reports and writing Proofs of Claim.
- Submitting legal documents to the various state and federal bankruptcy courts in a timely manner.
- Maintains files, as well as filing and monitoring cases on electronic platforms.
- May take or transcribe legal dictation, minutes of meetings, and taped records of conferences, settlement discussions, or interviews.
- Proofreads and corrects prepared materials for correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, format and content.
- Inputs, retrieves, updates, and deletes information using computerized databases.
- Sorts, opens, logs, and distributes incoming mail to staff and attorneys; attaches incoming correspondence to case file and related materials needed for action.
- Composes routine letters and memoranda and prepares reports using knowledge of practice area and guidelines.
- Ensures documents are in proper format and contain all necessary portions or related documents for court acceptance and filings.
- Prepares and assembles materials, documents, and exhibits for meetings, court appearances, and hearings.
- Receives and screens visitors and telephone calls; responds to inquiries on a variety of matters such as the status of pending cases, administrative and court rules, and appeal procedures.
- Schedules and arranges meetings and conferences and notifies interested parties; arranges travel for attorneys including scheduling transportation and making hotel reservations.
- Schedules assigned attorneys calendar of activities, including making commitments for meetings, conferences, or other engagements.
- Requisitions supplies, equipment and other services for the assigned desk and its alignment from the operations department.
- Acts as liaison with various internal departments as well as with outside vendors.
- Coordinates with the Finance Department with respect to billing matters.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- Possess knowledge of general office policies, procedures and practices.
- Experience in the electronic filing of cases on the U. S. Federal Bankruptcy Courts Electronic Case Filing System.
- Legal terminology, as well as national, federal, and state-specific bankruptcy procedures.
- Legal industry, writing, language and spelling skills.
Skills & Abilities:
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel), Adobe, and other litigation management applications, such as PACER, Relativity, Concordance, Westlaw, Lexis/Nexis, etc. Must type 75+ wpm.
- Produce documents using proper sentence structure, punctuation, grammar, and spelling.
- Plan and organize workload to comply with established time constraints.
- Work cooperatively with other employees and clients.
- Must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills. Communicate verbally and in writing daily with employees and clients.
- High school education or equivalent required, some higher education or vocational education preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of experience working directly in the bankruptcy practice area as a legal assistant in a law office.
Work Environment
- The Firm hybrid policy allows for four remote workdays per month (subject to change). The remaining days require in-office attendance in the Los Angeles office.
- The office environment is professional, collaborative, and focused on supporting high-stakes legal work in a law firm.
- Overtime may be required on an as-needed basis.

The reasonably expected pay scale for this position is $85,000 to $105,000 per year. This is an employer estimate and the salary offered within that range, and the potential for bonus and bonus amount, will depend on candidate’s years of practice, experience and performance.
