Kersten A. Broms is Senior Counsel in the Firm’s Portland office and a member of the Corporate practice group. Kersten advises individuals in the areas of U.S. and international estate planning; income, estate, and gift taxation; estate and trust administration; fiduciary and beneficiary matters; and agency-level tax controversy. She helps clients develop and implement complex estate planning, establish family limited liability companies and trusts (grantor, non-grantor, generation-skipping, spousal, dynasty, personal residence, insurance, and other specialty trusts), and works with families and closely held businesses on succession planning and gifting strategies.

Kersten also advises businesses on various aspects of U.S. federal income taxation, including S corporation compliance, international structuring and taxation, and other corporate tax matters. Prior to becoming an attorney, Kersten had a career in the financial industry as a personal financial advisor for nine years. She has a direct approach and no-nonsense attitude with a focus on building trust and developing long-term relationships with her clients.

  • Development of tax-efficient international company structures, including global transfer pricing strategy and documentation, international joint ventures and partnerships, IP planning and exploitation, indirect tax planning, post-acquisition integration, U.S. taxation of foreign operations, and repatriation planning for clients ranging from start-ups to large multinationals.
  • Led analysis and structuring of tax-efficient post-acquisition reorganization and integration of U.S. public multinational.
  • Assistance with U.S. and international tax controversies, particularly related to E.U. permanent establishment issues of U.S. multinational client.
