Businesses, creditor groups, and litigation trustees turn to Matt Wawrzyn when complex disputes arise in federal courts—particularly matters involving financial distress, bankruptcy litigation, and valuable intellectual property rights.

Matt is a Partner in Buchalter’s Chicago office and a member of the Firm’s Insolvency & Financial Law and Intellectual Property practice groups. He represents businesses, creditors, trustees, and investors in complex commercial disputes nationwide. His practice includes litigation arising from financial distress and bankruptcy proceedings, as well as high-stakes intellectual property disputes, where clients require strategic advocacy in federal trial and appellate courts.

Companies and financial stakeholders rely on Matt when disputes threaten enterprise value or creditor recoveries. He works closely with clients to develop practical litigation strategies designed to protect business interests, manage litigation risk, and position disputes for efficient resolution in federal courts.

A significant portion of Matt’s practice involves representing creditors’ committees, litigation trustees, and other fiduciaries in bankruptcy-related litigation and recovery actions. He recently represented the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors in the chapter 11 bankruptcy of TRP Brands LLC and continues to represent the Creditor Trust established for the benefit of unsecured creditors. In that role, he oversees litigation and recovery efforts designed to maximize distributions for creditor stakeholders.

Matt also maintains an active federal litigation and appellate practice representing plaintiffs and defendants in complex patent disputes across the United States. Businesses rely on him to handle technically demanding intellectual property litigation and federal appeals, including matters before the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. In 2022, he secured three reversals for patent owners in the Federal Circuit, helping clients preserve valuable patent rights.

Through these engagements, Matt assists businesses and fiduciaries in navigating complex disputes across multiple jurisdictions, including bankruptcy adversary proceedings, commercial litigation, and federal appellate matters.

Matt is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Illinois and the Supreme Court of the United States, as well as the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Federal, Second, Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth Circuits. He is also admitted to the U.S. District Courts for the Northern, Central, and Southern Districts of Illinois; the Northern and Southern Districts of Indiana; the Eastern and Western Districts of Wisconsin; the District of Colorado; and the Southern District of Texas.
