Marshall Olney is an Associate in Buchalter’s Los Angeles office, where he is a member of the Firm’s Tax, Benefits, Corporate, Aviation, and Greater China Practice groups.  He represents start-ups, emerging growth companies, and mature companies throughout their business life cycle from formation to exit.  His domestic and international tax practice includes business structuring and formation, executive compensation, business finance, reorganizations, and mergers and acquisitions.  His international tax practice also focuses on China and South East Asia.  In this capacity, he advises clients on a broad range of domestic and international tax matters, executive compensation, venture capital and private equity financing, reorganization and restructurings, and mergers and acquisitions tax matters. 

Mr. Olney’s unique educational background includes a Juris Doctor with a Corporate Specialization Certificate, an LL.M in American Business Tax Law, an LL.M in International Tax Law and Policy, an LL.M in Chinese Business Law, an MBA with a Finance Concentration, and a Master of Aeronautical Science. 

Marshall’s extensive experience working with start-up founders, even before he became a lawyer, gives him a unique perspective and understanding of the challenges they face. His service as an officer in the US Army on active duty, where he managed large teams and deployed his unit to Liberia for Operation United Assistance (OUA), the global effort to combat Ebola. Marshall has over 20 years of experience as an aviator in civilian and military aviation, managing corporate flight departments and acquiring aircraft.  Notably, he is a Panetta Fellow and briefly served as a Marshal (Clerk Equivalent) for a summer at the High Court of Hong Kong.

Mr. Olney is also a Certified Merger and Acquisition Advisor (CM&AA) and Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS).  He also holds certificates as a Legal Mergers & Acquisitions Expert (LM&A) and International Mergers & Acquisitions Expert (IM&A).  He also holds an FAA Airline Transport Certificate (ATP) and FAA Certified Flight Instructor Certificate (CFI).
