J. Leland Murphree represents a broad range of stakeholders in commercial insolvency matters both in and out of court. Mr. Murphree has a national practice advancing the interests of secured and unsecured creditors, debtors, fiduciaries, investors and creditors’ committees in bankruptcy disputes and distressed situations and transactions. Mr. Murphree seeks creative solutions to complex problems and has experience with matters across a variety of industries, including real estate, healthcare and senior living, manufacturing, higher education, automotive, agribusiness, hospitality, technology, energy and nonprofits.  

Throughout his career, Mr. Murphree has advised businesses of all types and sizes on matters ranging from the ordinary course to the existential. On any given day, he could be working with in-house counsel on drafting contracts and managing distressed transactions, advising leadership on fiduciary duties, and helping CFO’s navigate distressed credits and find ways to make the next payroll. Mr. Murphree finds practical solutions   through a multidisciplinary approach because business insolvency requires an understanding of all aspects of a client’s business.

Mr. Murphree has been recognized for several years as a leading practitioner by Chambers USA (Bankruptcy/Restructuring), Best Lawyers in America© (Bankruptcy and Creditor Debtor Rights/Insolvency and Reorganization Law) and Mid-South Super Lawyers (Bankruptcy: Business). In 2018, Mr. Murphree was included in the American Bankruptcy Institute’s 2018 Class of “Top 40 Under 40” Emerging Leaders in Insolvency.

Mr. Murphree is very involved in the American Bankruptcy Institute and writes and speaks on a variety of insolvency topics. He is the past president of the Alabama State Bar Bankruptcy and Commercial Law Section and the Turnaround Management Association’s Alabama Chapter and also served on the Alabama Law Institute’s advisory committees for the Alabama Uniform Voidable Transactions Act (2018) and the Alabama Uniform Commercial Real Estate Receivership Act (2024).

  • Lead counsel to sewer bond liquidity provider in Jefferson County’s $3.2 Billion Chapter 9 bankruptcy.
  • Lead debtor’s counsel to agribusiness concern in its Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring.
  • Represented large trade creditor in delivering postpetition goods and services in In re Westinghouse Electric Co. in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, obtaining full recovery.
  • Obtained the first federal “restructuring receivership” of 75-campus, for-profit college, selling a going-concern college and $36 Million in accounts receivable, obtaining emergency receivership financing, and addressing over $520 Million in claims in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Georgia.
  • Successfully converted a chapter 11 case of a commercial real estate developer to chapter 7 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Nevada.
  • Served as chapter 11 debtors’ counsel to a hospitality and leisure group in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.
  • Represented multiple institutional secured lenders in workouts, restructurings, foreclosures, and collections of over 1$ Billion in debt secured by various types of collateral and obligors nationwide.
  • Negotiated the workout and consensual foreclosure of non-recourse loans secured by office buildings in multiple states.
  • Defended national investment bank against chapter 7 trustee’s $24 Million successor liability and fraudulent transfer claims in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
  • Counsel to unsecured creditors committee of a home healthcare provider in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Tennessee, negotiating a chapter 11 plan that paid all unsecured creditors in full.
  • Represented successful purchasers in multiple 363 sales, including:
    • $10 Million purchase of oil and gas assets in in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.
    • Assumption of multiple grocery store leases in In re Southeastern Grocers (Winn Dixie) in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.
    • Acquisition of multiple grocery stores in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee.
    • $15 Million purchase of manufacturer in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Alabama.
  • Lead counsel to federal receiver and Chapter 11 bankruptcy trustee in multi-district receivership and bankruptcy proceedings of affiliated skilled nursing facilities in Alabama and Texas with over 330 beds, preserving and liquidating facilities and successfully pursuing claims against former owners/operators.
  • Represented leading Singapore-based computer gaming company in the acquisition of intellectual property assets of a U.S. technology company through UCC foreclosure.
  • Defended national financial institution in multiple workouts and lender liability lawsuits involving over $50 Million in variable rate demand notes and derivatives.
  • Lead counsel to indenture trustee and institutional bondholders in the workout and litigation of over $25 Million in bonds secured by improvement district special assessments.
  • Restructured $7.8 Million in defaulted bonds held by institutional bondholder and issued by Louisiana-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
