Buchalter is pleased to announce that Madhumita “Mita” Datta, PhD has joined the firm as a Partner in its Intellectual Property practice group, based in the San Francisco office.
Datta brings extensive experience managing emerging portfolios of startups and overseeing large domestic and international patent portfolios for institutional clients. She is widely valued for her ability to expedite patent prosecutions by leveraging the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s (USPTO) fast‑tracking provisions and special pilot programs. She also advises on intellectual property issues in corporate mergers and acquisitions, litigation, and other complex disputes.
“Mita is a tremendous addition to our nationally recognized Intellectual Property group,” said Adam Bass, President and Chief Executive Officer of Buchalter. “She brings a wealth of experience and a strong reputation that will further enhance our capabilities.”
With an extensive technical background in electrical and computer engineering, Datta drafts and prosecutes original patent applications and provides a broad range of patent‑related services across numerous advanced technologies. Her work spans complex microelectronic and optoelectronic devices and circuits, semiconductor equipment and manufacturing processes, AI and ML applications—including work automation and intelligent document processing—sensors for autonomous vehicles, thin‑film batteries, renewable energy solutions, high‑speed networks and protocols, simulation and software tools, biosensors, tracking and navigation devices, satellite‑based imaging, social networking platforms, and e‑commerce.
“Joining the firm is an outstanding opportunity, and I look forward to providing my clients with access to Buchalter’s comprehensive multi-service legal platform while helping a distinguished practice group grow in size and national prominence in intellectual property,” said Datta.
Datta is the recipient of a National Science Foundation research grant and holds a patent on optoelectronic device integration and packaging technology, later transferred to the NSA’s Microelectronics Research Laboratory. She has authored numerous legal and scientific publications and frequently presents at academic and industry conferences. Datta currently serves on the High‑Tech Law Advisory Board for Santa Clara University. In 2026, the High Tech Law Institute was renamed the Datta Center for High Tech Law in honor of her parents, supported by a generous endowment to advance the mission of preparing students to lead at the intersection of law, technology, business, and society.
Matthew Covington, the San Francisco office’s Managing Partner added, “San Francisco is tremendously fortunate to have Mita join us; adding her to our team further strengthens our ability to meet our clients’ rapidly evolving needs.”
“Mita is a great fit for us, and a strategic addition to our nationally ranked and growing Intellectual Property practice,” added Willmore F. Holbrow III, Chair of the Firm’s Intellectual Property Litigation Group.
A dedicated mentor, Datta has supported countless law students and junior professionals through the Leadership Council for Legal Diversity (LCLD) and Advancing Diversity Across Patent Teams (ADAPT). She was a founding member of the Chronic Conditions and Support (CCS) group at her previous firm and has participated in numerous patent‑focused pro bono initiatives across California, New York, and Utah. Datta has also taught IP fundamentals to underprivileged high school students through the All Stars Project. She is fluent in Bengali, English, and Hindi.
“Welcoming Madhumita marks an important step in our continued growth. Her expertise in technological products and services will help us expand our capabilities and deliver even greater value” added Bass.
