NYC’s Mamdani Brings $30 Minimum Wage To Spotlight

Mamdani, who won the Democratic primary in July ahead of November’s general election, has campaigned on a progressive agendathat includes a $30 hourly minimum wage by 2030, followed by automatic increases based on cost of living and productivitymetrics. The $30 floor is higher than the rates Mamdani’s primary opponents put forward and almost twice the city’s currentminimum, which is $16.50.
“It is aggressive and ambitious,” said Leah Lively of management-side firm Buchalter PC. “The thought behind it is very good; wewant people to be able to pay their bills. But I think if there’s not care taken in how it’s implemented, it could have negative effectsagainst many of the workers who it’s aiming to assist.”
